3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Danger! Combustible liquid and vapor. May cause skin irritation. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Pulmonary aspiration hazard—can enter lungs and cause damage.
potential health effects
Inhalation: LC50 in rats is 5500 mg/m3, time 4 hours. Excessive exposures may cause irritation to eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Central nervous system effects including dizziness, loss of balance and coordination, unconsciousness, coma, respiratory failure and death.
Skin: Practically non–toxic if absorbed. May cause moderate irritation with prolonged or repeated contact.
Eyes: Contact with the eyes may cause minimal irritation
Ingestion: Oral LD50 in rats is 5 g/kg. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Pulmonary aspiration hazard if swallowed and/or vomiting occurs. Can enter lungs and cause damage.
Carcinogenicity: Not listed as a carcinogen by IARC, NTP, OSHA, OR ACGIH.
4. FIRST AID MEASURES
EYE CONTACT:
Flush eyes with large amounts of water for a least fifteen minutes. If irritation persists, get medical attention.
SKIN CONTACT:
Wash with soap and water until no odor remains. If redness or swelling develops, obtain medical assistance.
Remove grossly contaminated clothing, including shoes, and launder before reuse
INHALATION:
Using proper respiratory protection, immediately remove the affected victim from exposure. Administer artificial respiration if breathing is stopped. Keep at rest. Call for prompt medical attention.
INGESTION:
If swallowed, DO NOT induce vomiting. Do not give liquids! Obtain emergency medical attention.. Small amounts which accidentally enter mouth should be rinsed out until taste is gone.
5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Flash Point: 105°F Method; TCC NOTE: Minimum
flammable limits: LEL: 0.8 UEL: 5.0 NOTE: Approximate
Auto ignition Temperature: 540°F NOTE: Approximate
general hazard: Combustible Liquids can form combustible mixtures at temperatures at or above the flashpoint. Material can accumulate and discharge static charges, which can cause an incendiary electrical discharge.
"Empty" containers retain product residue (liquid and/or vapor) and can be dangerous. do not pressurize, cut, weld, solder, drill, grind, or expose such containers to heat, flame, sparks, static electricity or other sources of ignition; they may explode and cause injury of death. Empty drums should be completely drained, properly bunged and promptly returned to a drum reconditioner, or properly disposed.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
land spill
Eliminate sources of ignition. Prevent additional discharge of material, if possible to do so without hazard. For small spills implement cleanup procedures; for large spills, implement cleanup procedures and, if in public area, keep public away and advise authorities. Also, if this product is subject to CERCLA reporting (see Section 15 REGULATORY INFORMATION) notify the National Response Center. Prevent liquid from entering sewers, watercourses, or low areas. Contain spilled liquid with sand or earth. Do not use combustible materials such a sawdust. Recover by pumping (use an explosion-proof or hand pump) or with a suitable absorbent. Consult an expert on disposal of recovered material and ensure conformity to local disposal regulations.
water spill
Eliminate sources of ignition. Warn occupants and shipping in surrounding and downwind areas of fire and explosion hazards and request all to stay clear. Remove form surface by skimming or with suitable adsorbents. If allowed by local authorities and environmental agencies, sinking and/or suitable dispersants may be used in non-confined water. Consult an expert on disposal of recovered material and ensure conformity to local disposal regulations.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
electrostatic accumulation hazard:
Yes, Use proper grounding procedure
storage temperature, °F: Ambient
storage/transport pressure, mm. Hg.: Atmospheric
storage and handling:
Keep container closed. Handle and open containers with care. Store in a cool, well-ventilated place away form incompatible materials. Do NOT handle or store near an open flame, heat or other sources of ignition. Protect material from direct sunlight. Material will accumulate static charges, which may cause an electrical spark (ignition source). Use proper grounding procedures.
DO NOT pressurize, cut, heat, or weld containers. Empty product containers may contain product residue. DO NOT reuse empty containers without commercial cleaning or reconditioning.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
exposure controls
The use of mechanical dilution ventilation is recommended whenever this product is used in a confined space, is heated above ambient temperatures, or is agitated.
personal protection
For open systems where contact is likely, wear safety glasses with side shields, long sleeves, and chemical resistant gloves. Where contact may occur, wear safety glasses with side shields.
Where concentrations in air may exceed the limits given in this section and engineering, work practice or other means of exposure reduction are not adequate, NIOSH/MSHA approved respirators may be necessary to prevent overexposure by inhalation.
recommended occupational exposure limit
100 ppm total hydrocarbon is the maximum TWA recommended by OSHA
